English translation:

"Dancing is a philosophy of life."

Melina Shabel was destined to be a dancer. From the time she was in her mother's womb, this artist, originally from Argentina, knew what dance was in all its forms.

Being her mother an amateur dancer, she took her to dance-related activities from a young age, so it has always been part of her being. And although she has tried different contemporary dances, it was one in particular that enamored her: African dance or Afro dance.

"Fifteen years ago, I discovered African dances and loved it from the first moment I danced it, in Argentina (...) Every time a teacher from Brazil or Africa arrived, I went to all the special workshops, classes, seminars; and during my travels too," she says.

In 2016, Melina arrived in New Zealand with the idea of traveling for a year and then continuing the adventure, but eight years later she is still here, fulfilling what she always wanted: to dance and share her art.

Already in 2021, she decides to start teaching classes for the community, many of them with live percussion. "There is something very particular that the drums give us, how they connect us with our heart, body, with the other people around us. They bring another presence, that is the great thing about African dances. They also do not have much structure, these dances were done to celebrate, communicate, to connect the community and I think all that is what enamored me."

Melina says that her classes "are fun, it doesn't matter if you do it perfectly or not, we make new friends, you feel that you belong to a group, you connect and go to a space where you can be yourself."

In addition to her Afro dance classes, this artist began to give workshops on body expression and stretching in Spanish, providing a free space to relax, practice connection and breathing, without the language barrier in between.

Her dedication to the community has also allowed her to participate in various festivals and performances in Queenstown. "Beyond giving classes, I am a dancer, teacher, and performance artist. All proposals related to festivals, art, creativity, and the community involve me because I love being part of it."

Melina has gradually gained recognition, not only for her talent but also for sharing her passion with others. "Dancing has always been my therapy since I was a girl, it has always been my way of healing, expressing, feeling (...) for me, dancing is a philosophy of life," she says.

Likewise, thanks to her teaching experience, she confesses to have discovered a "beautiful exchange" with those who attend her workshops, where love, hugs, and gratitude are present.

Afro Dance Classes: Wednesday 7pm - Te Atamira, Remarkables Park Body Awareness Classes, Stretching: Monday 7.30pm - Sherwood Hotel Workshops on body expression, meditative art, or dance for children, itinerant.
